A. "e-business:
The Insurance Industry @ Risk"
Mr. Kishore Ramchandani, IBM Executive Consultant,
led the insurance industry segment of IBM’s Worldwide Thought
Leadership study. The seminar provides a comprehensive "state
of the industry" report outlining the nature of change
in the insurance industry resulting from B2B/B2C/internet applications.
Interviews were compiled from more than 75 senior executives
representing 25 insurance companies in the U.S. and Europe.
This workshop has been filed for two CE credits in both Ohio
and Kentucky
B. "The Internet
and Insurance - Or How I Learned to Love the Web"
provides insightful demographics, outlines
and tips on how to use the Internet to increase work efficiencies.
The seminar also highlights changes in automation and underwriting
practices utilized today, and those expected in the near future.
Mr. Paul B. Nielander, Principal Consultant for Nielander
and Associates has 22 years of executive management experience
with national insurers including Safeco Insurance Co., Chubb
& Son, Inc., Indiana Insurance Co. and the Kemper Insurance
Co.’s. This workshop has been filed for two CE credits in
both Ohio and Kentucky.
C. "Learning to Risk Manage
Internet Exposures" will be presented
by Mr. Lawrence E. Harb, President and CEO of IT Risk Managers,
Inc. specializing in training, consulting and risk management
products for the insurance industry. Mr. Harb’s presentation
focuses on identifying and understanding the exposures to loss
associated with the risks of doing business online. He will
also provide referral sources and identify insurance coverages
available in today’s marketplace. Additionally, he will address
the underwriting, loss control and sales processes related to
obtaining a "dot.com insurance" policy. This
workshop has been filed for two CE credits in both Ohio and
Kentucky.

Keynote Address

Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance

Ohio Governor Bob Taft
named Lee Covington as Director of the Ohio Department
of Insurance in March of 1999. In his first year as Director,
Covington worked to successfully pass the Governor’s Patient
Protection Bill and implemented several technology initiatives
resulting in the Department winning the NAIC State
Regulation 2000 Technology Award. The Department launched
a new internet agent testing and licensing system allowing
applicants to submit applications on-line, complete fingerprinting
and the background check electronically, be tested, and
receive a license within five (5) to seven (7) days. The
Department also received an "A" grade from the
Consumer Federation of America for its outstanding new
website and consumer guides.
Covington is a member
of the Executive Committee of the NAIC, Chair of the Regulatory
Reengineering Task Force and Electronic Commerce Working
Group and Vice-Chair of the Special Insurance Issues Committee.
Covington completed his
undergraduate work with a B.S.B.A. in Banking and Finance.
He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of
Law a published member of the Arkansas Law Review. His
work has also been published in the Arkansas Hospital
Association Magazine. He has been a member of the Pulaski
County, Arkansas and American Bar Associations. He has
performed pro bono legal work through the Volunteer Organization
for Central Arkansas Legal Services ("VOCALS"),
as well as serving as a mentor at the University of Arkansas
at Little Rock Law School.
Lee and his wife, Heather
are the proud parents of twin daughters, Katherine Joy
(Kate) and Kendall Faith.
